concluded. ‘Come on,’ she said. ‘You must be planning something to do with the Bastions, or why else would you be sending Rojin to the Facility to meet with your mysterious source?’ ‘That was just reconnaissance,’ Rojin protested. ‘I wasn’t meeting with anyone. Just making the pick-up.’ ‘Oh, I see. So that was another disk you handed Tod when we arrived, your source’s way of bringing you up to speed.’ Rojin looked guiltily at Tod, who was shaking his head with an ‘I-don’t-know-why-I-bother’ expression on his face. ‘Bit of a risk picking it up in person, wasn’t it?’ Compassion went on. Karron was looking dreamily at Rojin now. ‘Not really’ he said, a little embarrassed, glancing at his watch. ‘Illicit communications from top-secret facilities tend to get picked up,’ Tod pointed out. ‘An5way, our source swung the security angle. Rojin was never in any real danger.’ Rojin snorted. ‘Till Compassion started running wild.’ Then Slatin piped up. ‘How were you able to get on board a Bastion, Compassion?’ she asked, her voice quiet and mousy but alive with interest. Compassion smiled. ‘By having even bigger plans than you do?’ Tod shook his head. ‘Didn’t do you much good, though, did they?’ ‘You don’t know the damage we achieved up there,’ Compassion said. ‘The damage we could go on to do if we could get back to our. . . ship.’ ‘Ship?’ Amman echoed. ‘My. . . group developed and constructed an experimental craft,’ Compassion said. ‘Something specially designed to infiltrate the Bastions.’ The group was hanging on her every word. ‘We did it too - but we had to bail out in a life capsule when the emergency shutters came down.’ ‘Awesome,’ whispered Kurd, his eyes alight. ‘And your ship’s still up there?’ Tod asked. ‘On board number 634,’ Compassion confirmed. ‘Say we could reach it,’ Tod said. ‘If we could get our hands on that. . . ’ He looked at her sharply. ‘We could use it to gain access to the other Bastions?’ ‘Oh, easily’ Compassion lied blithely. ‘Each and every one, if you wanted, no problem.’ Tod was glancing at his watch and fidgeting. ‘Am I boring you?’ she asked. Tod looked up. If anything, he seemed nervous rather than bored. ‘Not just now, you’re not,’ he said, wandering over to the far side of the room. ‘So. How many would this vessel hold, then?’ ‘Well. . . ’ Compassion began. 130
